MedCentral Health System Improves Patient Safety and Staff Efficiency With Amcom Software Enterprise Middleware Solution
- Progressive organization centralizes alerts for temperature tracking and immediate orders for EKG and respiratory technicians
- Commtech Messenger sends detailed text notifications to the appropriate staff members on Cisco Wi-Fi phones to enable fast response
MINNEAPOLIS, MN May 24, 2011 Amcom Software, Inc. today announced that MedCentral Health System is using Amcom Commtech Messenger middleware to detect and send AeroScout temperature monitoring and Soarian healthcare information system workflow alerts to the right staff members on their Cisco Wi-Fi phones. The Mansfield, Ohio-based provider is improving patient safety and staff efficiency by funneling these alerts only to the appropriate staff members, eliminating delays and confusion over who is handling response. MedCentral is also finalizing the integration of alerts such as critical codes and patient requests from its GE Telligence and TekTone nurse call systems so this information goes directly to the assigned caregivers' Cisco phones.
The centralized Commtech Messenger system supports two hospital facilities. As part of this project, MedCentral began using Cisco Wi-Fi phones to enable more effective sharing of important details within the alert notification. For example, now the correct technicians know exactly where out-of-tolerance refrigerators for critical medications are located, or if blanket warmers in the maternity area show signs of incorrect heating patterns. Likewise, respiratory therapy and cardio technicians can receive an immediate (stat) order that a patient in a particular room has been scheduled for testing or treatment at a certain time. This is possible because a staff member enters the appointment into the Soarian system, which sends it to Commtech Messenger for routing to an available technician. The ability to reach the right person is possible through the software's Web-based staff assignment capabilities, which let the system know for each shift which device belongs to which person.
"The Amcom system helps us provide better patient care by letting us alert staff faster and with more relevant information than before," said Steve Ridenour, systems manager, MedCentral Health System. "We look forward to incorporating our nurse call systems into the process."
"MedCentral, like many of our customers has discovered the powerful time-saving benefits of Commtech Messenger, especially when it's used as a hub for a variety of facility-wide notifications," said Chris Heim, president, Amcom Software. "MedCentral's ability to centrally manage alerts from monitoring systems and send them immediately to the right mobile staff member means patients are attended to more quickly and staff can go about their duties in a more efficient manner."
